A Volunteer’s Story
Mike Wind has been volunteering with Rebuilding Together St Louis for 15 years. He started in 1996 when Rebuilding Together was called Christmas in April. Mike is now retired but first became involved with Rebuilding Together St Louis when he was working at Citigroup.
“I started out as a House Captain with the Citi folks, then became a Board of Directors member and managed the 10 houses that Citi sponsored. Then I became Treasurer on the board, then President, then Chairman.”
Mike retired from the Board after being Chairman because he had retired from Citi and felt it was in RT’s best interest to get new blood on the Board of Directors. Soon after stepping down from the Board of Directors, John Down coaxed him into participating in doing year round repairs for Rebuilding Together Express. He also continued to be a House Captain on Rebuilding Day.
Mike’s favorite part of Rebuilding Day is being able to work together with friends and neighbors. Everyone is able to share the experience of helping a homeowner in need. “It’s self satisfaction. It’s knowing that you personally made a difference in someone’s life.”
Mike has also been involved in helping to rebuild homes on the gulf coast after hurricanes Katrina and Rita. He has gone down to Louisiana 13 times to be a House Captain or a volunteer for the Rebuilding Together affiliates there.
