A Volunteer’s Story

John Wessling

In only three years with Rebuilding Together John Wessling has worn the hat of Work Evaluator, House Captain, Certified Lead Renovator, House Selection Review Committee Member and Rebuilding Day volunteer. When John is not donating his time to Rebuilding Together he is an ASHI (American Society of Home Inspectors) Certified Home Inspector.

His skills as a home inspector are crucial for his Work Evaluator position. “I review the home inside and out, top to bottom.  I then complete our Excel spreadsheet by entering the potential repairs and estimated material costs.” John is also trained as a Certified Lead Renovator and supervises volunteer crews on how to work safely with lead paint on Rebuilding Day.

One of the projects John served as a Captain for was a community project in O’Fallon Park in North St. Louis. He supervised volunteers to clean, repair and paint the fountain next to the Boat House. The transformation of the fountain had a huge impact on the revitalization of the park and neighborhood.

So, what keeps John coming back every year? “I believe in helping others improve their lives by sharing my talents.  I also get to see unique conditions in homes, meet wonderful seniors, share a moment in their life, see wonderful collections of logos, jazz music and albums, rifles, flags and many other things.  I also experience factors in homes that help keep my inspection skills sharp.”
