A Volunteer’s Story
Gary Tate was the accounting manager for Straub’s Markets where he worked for 38 years. He retired three years ago and has been wearing many hats as a Rebuilding Together St Louis volunteer since then.
Gary has been involved with Rebuilding Together on and off for the last 20 years. Through his church, he volunteered with Christmas in April (Rebuilding Together St Louis’ former name). Gary is involved with RT year round as a Rebuilding Together Express volunteer. He has also volunteered on several work day projects and has done wall and ceiling repair, flooring repairs and installation, minor plumbing repairs, painting and more. As a Rebuilding Together Express guy, Gary not only gets to help low income homeowners with minor home repair, he is constantly learning new skills from his fellow Rebuilding Together Express volunteers.
“Meeting homeowners and volunteers and the good feeling that comes with improving the living conditions of the homeowners” is what keeps Gary coming back every year.
In June of this year Gary was a House Captain for RT’s Bike & Build project. Thirty college students stopped in St. Louis on their ride across the country and provided the labor to make significant improvements to a local home.
