Longtime Rebuilding Together – St. Louis volunteer Marty McClimens, a professional plumber and instructor with the Plumbers and Pipefitters Local 562, was recently presented with the Bank of America Local Hero Award for his outstanding service to the community. McClimens was one of five local recipients who were also rewarded with a $5,000 check. McClimens donated his award to Rebuilding Together.

Since becoming involved with Rebuilding Together more than 10 years ago, McClimens has contributed more than 100 hours each year to coordinate involvement of the plumbing and pipefitting union in the area of home repair and maintenance projects for Rebuilding Together.

McClimens’ efforts have increased participation from a handful of general contractors and handymen 10 years ago to more than 240 professional plumbers in 2007. His efforts have led to participation of not only current plumbers, but retired plumbers, supply houses and inspectors. He is now one of more than 500 tradesmen who come together each year to volunteer their time and talents to support Rebuilding Together.

“Marty has been a central figure in getting other unions and associations of skilled tradesmen involved with Rebuilding Together,” said Lynne Rajani, executive director of Rebuilding Together – St. Louis. “It is in large part because of his contacts and willingness to get involved that these other important organizations have joined us in our cause.” she said. “And we couldn’t do it without them.”

McClimens has even integrated Rebuilding Together into his apprenticeship training programs, helping young plumbers learn more about renovation and repair work while at the same time teaching them the importance of contributing to the community.
